MSC provides on-timelogistics, strategic sealift, as well as specializedmissions anywhere in the world, in contested oruncontested environments.The Medical Services Officer (MSO) performs a variety ofadministrative, patient care, and department head dutiesand functions pertaining to the complete operation of ashipboard Medical Department: General Administration,Medical Administration, healthcare, fiscal and supply,training, pest control and sanitation, Occupational1

The MSO is directlyresponsible to the Master while assigned onboard MSCships. Ensures continuing application of and compliancewith EEO laws, regulations and policies.1.GENERAL ADMINISTRATION AND FUNCTIONSOn a daily basis the MSO is required to maintain allMedical Department records, including medical ledgers,logs, inventories, individual health records andDepartment of Labor forms such as Federal WorkersCompensation Forms, etc.2.HEALTH CAREThe MSO onboard MSC ships shall provide, at a minimum,the equivalent level of care as that provided by a NavyIndependent Duty Hospital Corpsman. Documentation ofall care provided will be complete, accurate and legiblein conformance with current clinical standards. Theincumbent will actively support required medical qualityassurance and quality improvement programs.3.FISCAL AND SUPPLYThe MSO is responsible for all of the supply functionsunique to the Medical Department. The incumbent carriesout all policies and procedures concerning afloatmedical equipment and supplies, including medicalconsumables and maintain inventory at prescribed levels.4.TRAININGThe MSO shall conduct on a routine basis a schedule ofmedical training lectures for all embarked personnel orsubsets of the crew as appropriate for the topics toinclude Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation/AutomatedExternal Defibrillator (CPR/AED) training and preventivehealth education training. Additionally, the MSO shallprovide to reporting personnel a general orientationthat includes review of current medications theindividual may be taking, medical services available,personal hygiene and location and use of emergencymedical equipment.2
5.PEST CONTROL AND SANITATIONThe MSO is responsible to the Master for inspecting andreporting on the sanitation of the ship.The MSO shall: (a) ensure currency of his/her pestcontrol managers certificate, (b) conduct on at least amonthly basis, inspections of all food services spaces,storerooms, ship stores, and any other spaces that maybe of concern to preclude the presence of a storedproduct pest, roaches, or rodents, in accordance withthe guidance provided by area preventive medicine units,(c) monitor pest control spraying, trapping, and baitingby Navy approved pest control personnel and log resultsof surveys, (d) maintain the Pest Control Log in SAMSand ensure that surveys, spraying, and pest controlsupplies are conducted by Navy approved pest controlpersonnel and are entered in the appropriate logs, (e)ensure that adequate supplies are maintained onboard andthat they are stored in accordance with existinginstructions, (f) provide for the establishment of apest control spill kit and maintain accordingly, and (g)inspect all fresh produce and refrigerated items comingaboard to ensure quality and that it is pest free.6.OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINEThe MSO will ensure that all physicals, medicalsurveillance, and chronic disease tracking andimmunizations remain current and are scheduledappropriately.7.COLLATERAL DUTYServe as primary Collection Site Coordinator (CSC) forthe Drug Free Workplace Program (DFWP) and as alternateBreath Alcohol Technician (BAT) onboard MSC CivilService Mariner (CIVMAR) manned Ships.8.MARITIME PREPOSITIONING SHIP SQUADRON (MPSRON)The MSO may be assigned to a Maritime PrepositioningShip Squadron (MPSRON).The MSO assigned to a MPSRON, under routine conditions,has responsibilities that have a significant impact onthe day-to-day operations of the MPSRON. When a MPSRONis called into action those MSO responsibilities will3

SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION AND RESPONSE - VICTIMADVOCATE (SAPR-VA) DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS IN ACCORDANCEWITH OPNAVINST 1752.1C and DoDI 6495.02The MSO serves as a shipboard Sexual Assault Preventionand Response-Victim Advocate (SAPR-VA) onboard MSCvessels.All MSOs comply with all Defense Sexual Assault VictimAdvocacy Credentialing Program (D-SAACO) requirements asa condition of employment.Shipboard SAPR-VAs’ are the first responder for allsexual assault incidents involving adults.MinimumEligibilityRequirements:Everything in this Position Description is considered tobe an essential function of this position.
