Forexample, ASTM A450, a general tubing specification, reads:11.Swagelok stainless steel tube fittings have been repeatedlytested successfully with tubing with hardness up to 200 HVand 90 HRB.Tubing Wall ThicknessThe accompanying tables show working pressure ratings oftubing in a wide range of wall thicknesses. Except as noted, allowable pressure ratings are calculated from S values asspecified by ASME B31.3, Process Piping.Swagelok tube fittings have been repeatedly tested in boththe minimum and maximum wall thicknesses shown.Swagelok tube fittings are not recommended for tube wallthicknesses outside the ranges shown in the accompanyingtables for each size.Tubing HandlingGood handling practices can greatly reduce scratches ontubing and protect the good surface finish that reliable tubemanufacturers supply. Tubing should never be dragged out of a tubing rack oracross a rough surface. Tube cutters or hacksaws should be sharp. Do not takedeep cuts with each turn of the cutter or stroke of the saw. Tube ends should be deburred. This helps to ensure thatthe tubing will go all the way through the ferrules withoutdamaging the ferrule sealing edge.Straightness and Finish11.1 Finished tubes shall be reasonably straight and havesmooth ends free of burrs. They shall have a workmanlikefinish. Surface imperfections (Note) may be removed byThis document, and more, is available for download from Martin's Marine Engineering Page - www.dieselduck.net
Tubing Data225Gas ServiceGases (air, hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, etc.) have very smallmolecules that can escape through even the most minuteleak path. Some surface defects on the tubing can providesuch a leak path. As tube outside diameter (OD) increases,so does the likelihood of a scratch or other surface defectinterfering with proper sealing. The most successful connection for gas service will occurif all installation instructions are carefully followed and theheavier wall thicknesses of tubing on the accompanyingtables are selected.A heavy-wall tube resists ferrule action more than a thinwall tube, allowing the ferrules to coin out minor surfaceimperfections. A thin-wall tube offers less resistance to ferruleaction during installation, reducing the chance of coining outsurface defects, such as scratches. Within the applicablesuggested allowable working pressure table, select a tubewall thickness whose working pressure is outside of theshaded areas.TUBINGDATATubing InstallationTRLFractional, in.TTube ODL➀Metric, mmTTube ODL➀1/161/23191/823/32621T Tube ODL Required straight tube3/163/48231/413/1610255/167/81231R Radius of tubing bend3/815/16141/21 3/1615length (see tables)5/83/4Tubing properly selected and handled, combined withproperly installed Swagelok tube fittings, will give you a leaktight system and provide reliable service in a wide variety ofapplications.1 1/41632187/81 5/162011 1/2221 1/4225401 1/22 13/32284623 1/43050325438635080➀ Required straight tube length. For maximum assurance of reliable performance, use:34 properly selected and handled high-quality tubing—suchas provided by Swagelok Swagelok tube fittings assembled in accordance withcatalog instructions an appropriate tube support system to limit the movementof tubing and fluid system components. When installing fittings near tube bends, there must be asufficient straight length of tubing to allow the tube to bebottomed in the Swagelok fitting (see tables).Hydraulic Swaging UnitA Swagelok multihead hydraulic swaging unit (MHSU) mustbe used to install 1 1/4, 1 1/2, and 2 in. and 28, 30, 32, 38,and 50 mm Swagelok tube fittings. No implicationis made that these values can be used for design work.Applicable codes and practices in industry should beconsidered. ASME Codes are the successor to andreplacement of ASA Piping Codes. All pressures are calculated from equations in ASMEB31.3, Process Piping. See factors for calculating workingpressures in accordance with ASME B31.1, Power Piping. Calculations are based on maximum OD and minimum wallthickness, except as noted in individual tables.Example: 1/2 in. For tubing of 304 / 304L stainless steel, replace SS in the ordering number with 304L.
