How to Cast Out Demons and Break CursesForewordSome years ago I published my book “Demons Defeated”.Since then there has been an explosion of interest in the matterof the deliverance ministry and I have produced this short bookletin order to encourage members of the Body of Christ. As in my book, “Demons Defeated”, I freely acknowledge theblessed teaching which I received through Dr Derek Prince manyyears ago and it has provided the foundation of my understandingin this particular area of ministry.I trust this book will be a real blessing to those who desire tounderstand in a simple way this important aspect of ministry. On many occasions the Lord has drawn my attention to thefact that He requires us to preach the gospel, cast out demonsand heal the sick. I do trust this book will go a long way towardsencouraging others in one important part of the three-foldministry, namely the casting out of demons.
What are Demons? ONEWhat Are Demons?Demons are spirit beings without a body which seek a body tolive in.They do not care whether they live in a person or in an animalbut they need a body through which they can express themselves. There are conflicting theories as to their origin but thisdoes not matter for the purpose of this study. The word “demon” comes from the Greek word “daimon” or“daimonion” meaning breath or spirit.Although we cannot see these spirit beings, neverthelessthey do exist. Heathen cultures have always acknowledged theirexistence but our so-called sophisticated western society usuallydenies their existence. Some psychologists have described them as “parts of thepersonality”, but refuse to acknowledge their existence as spiritualbeings. Jesus Christ had no problem about their existence.Throughout the gospels we have references to Him casting themout of various people. In fact He said:“These signs will follow those who believe. In My namethey will cast out demons.” (Mark 16:17)
How to Cast Out Demons and Break CursesOne of the functions then of Christians is to cast out demonsand the purpose of this book is to encourage Christians to bewilling and able to do so. We don’t need to be afraid of them.“He, who is in us, is greater than he who is in theworld.” (1 John 4:4)I had only been a committed Christian for a short time whena deeply troubled person was brought to me for help. The Lordgently spoke into my ear the word, “abortion”, and as I spoke thisword out this man, who had been a committed Christian himself, fell to the floor, curled up like a foetus and began to scream. Itwas in the subsequent weeks that as we ministered to this man,I began to learn about demon activity.Demons have an intense desire to live in a body. The legion ofdemons who lived in the man who had come out of the tombs, begged Jesus to send them into the swine. They said, “Send us tothe swine that we may enter them.”This is the desire of demons, to find a body in which they maylive and thus express their characteristics.
How to Cast Out DemonsDemonsandhaveBreakPersonalityCurses TWODemons have PersonalityAs we look at the Scriptures, we find that demons have specificmarks of personality.1. THEY HAVE KNOWLEDGEThe demons in the man in the synagogue said to Jesus:“Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus ofNazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are- the Holy One of God!” (Mark 1:24)They knew that Jesus was the Messiah.2. THEY KNOW WHO THEY AREJesus asked the demons in the man who came out of thetombs the question:“What is your name?” And he answered, saying, ‘Myname is Legion; for we are many.”’ (Mark 5:9)It was not the man responding. It was the demons in theman. They knew who they were. Demons do have knowledge ofthemselves.
How to Cast Out Demons and Break Curses3. THEY HAVE A WILLJesus said:“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goesthrough dry places, seeking rest and finds none. Thenhe says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’”(Matthew I2:43-44)Yes, demons do have a will.4. DEMONS HAVE EMOTIONSWe are told in Scripture by James:“You believe that there is one God. You do well. Eventhe demons believe - and tremble!” (James 2:19)Many times in the course of deliverance, we find a demonicpower manifesting by way of trembling through a person. Theirconscience cannot respond to the gospel. Scripture tells us that:“.in the latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscienceseared with a hot iron.” (I Timothy 4:1-2)The Greek makes it clear that it is not speaking of peoplehere but of the demons which cannot respond to the gospelbecause their conscience has been seared.5. THEY CAN SPEAKAs we have already seen, the demons spoke to Jesus:“I know who you are - the Holy One of God!” (Mark1:24)
How to Cast Out Demons andHowBreakDemonsCursesAct THREEHow Demons Act1. THEY HARASSOne of the primary activities of demons is to harass people, especially Christians. They are the agents of Satan, sent to bothobstruct Christians in their walk or to prevent people turning toJesus.“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, butagainst principalities, against powers, against the rulersof the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts ofwickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)2. THEY ENSLAVEWe are assured in Scripture that we did not receive the spiritof bondage (or slavery) again to fear.“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again tofear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom wecry out, “Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15)No, we have not received the spirit of slavery, but rather theSpirit of adoption through Jesus Christ. Accordingly, demonicpower, acting through people, causes them to be compulsive intheir actions, e.g. in their talking or eating or in other habits.
10How to Cast Out Demons and Break Curses3. THEY ENTICE“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by hisown desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived,it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, bringsforth death. (James 1:14-15)When we fail to crucify the flesh and allow unclean or wrongdesires to tempt us, then we open the door to demonic powerand can be enticed by demons into deeper sin.4. DEMONS DECEIVE“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times somewill depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spiritsand doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, havingtheir own conscience seared with a hot iron.” (1 Timothy 4:12)Yes, demons deceive and speak lies.5. DEMONS TORMENTThe Scripture makes it clear that God has not given us thespirit of fear or torment, but of power and of love and of a soundmind.“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of powerand of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)“.fear involves torment.” (1 John 4:18)Those who are in total fear are often tormented by demonpowers.
How to Cast Out Demons andHowBreakDemonsCursesAct116. DEMONS DRIVE AND COMPELThe man from the tombs had a demon which often seized himand he was driven by the demon into the wilderness.“For He had commanded the unclean spirit to comeout of the man. For it had often seized him, and he waskept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; andhe broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into thewilderness.” (Luke 8:29)This is the function of demons, to drive and compel if theyhave the opportunity.7. DEMONS DEFILE“To the pure all things are pure, but to those who aredefiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even theirmind and conscience are defiled.” (Titus 1:15)Many people who have been bound by demonic activity findtheir minds and lives have been defiled.8. DEMONS FIGHTThey fight against our personal harmony, our peace of mindand physical well-being, causing disruptiveness with otherpeople, especially those closest to us. Their great distinctivemark is restlessness. They can affect us in our emotions, attitudes and relationships, for example they cause resentment, hatred, fear or rebellion. In addition, they can affect the thoughts of the mind, causing
12How to Cast Out Demons and Break Cursesdoubt, unbelief, indecision and procrastination. In the area of the tongue, they can cause lying, cursing, gossipand blasphemy and in the sexual area, perversion, homosexualityand masturbation.Further, they can affect us in the area of alcohol, nicotine, gluttony and anorexia and in physical infirmities they often causetumours, heart attacks, arthritis, allergies and cramps. Most addictions come out of frustration. The demon of lying needs a tongue to lie through, a demon ofdoubt needs a mind to doubt through and a demon of lust needssexual organs to lust through. If we have recurrent evil, disruptive, emotional attitudes whichdominate us against our will, for example resentment, hatred, fear, envy, jealousy and pride or extreme moodiness with changesfrom being extremely talkative to unnaturally quiet, or if thereis an unnatural restlessness and talkativeness, these can be thesigns of demonic activity.
How to Cast Out DemonsHowandDemonsBreak CursesEnter13FOURHow Demons Enter1. THROUGH OUR OWN SINA list of major sins from Scripture has already been referred toin the previous chapter.Such things as idolatry, rebellion against God, unforgiveness, anger, rejection, hatred, bitterness, oral sex, sodomy, homosexuality, lying, lust and similar sins can provide a platformthrough which demons can enter. The following is a most interesting Scripture:“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, searchingall the inner depths of his heart.” (Proverbs 20:27)The marginal note in the New King James Version says that theliteral translation of the word ‘heart’ is ‘the rooms of the belly’.Thus, one could say that our heart spiritually contains rooms. If sin resides in any one of these rooms, then it can provide aplatform for demonic activity. This is one of the reasons whyChristians can be troubled with demons.2. THROUGH THE SINS OF OUR ANCESTORSIdolatry which brings the curse of God on to the third andfourth generation.
14How to Cast Out Demons and Break Curses“And God spoke all these words, saying:‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of theland of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.You shall not make for yourself any carved image, orany likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or thatis in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under theearth; You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I,the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquityof the fathers on the children to the third and fourthgenerations of those who hate Me.” (Exodus 20:1-5)Some effects of hereditary sin:RejectionWitchcraft and occultismAbnormal fearsCursesSexual lustCultural problemsAddictionsSchizophreniaRebellionAnger3. DOMINATION OF ONE PERSON BY ANOTHERThe spirit of Jezebel. Jezebel is referred to in Scripture both asa person and as a spirit. It is significant that the persons referred to as Jezebel havemany of the same characteristics of the spirit of Jezebel. Jezebelis one of the three strong men which form the unholy trinity.
How to Cast Out DemonsHowandDemonsBreak CursesEnter15Jesus said we must bind the strong man:“Or else how can one enter a strong man’s house andplunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man?And then he will plunder his house.” (Matthew 12:29)Jezebel is called the Lady of Kingdoms in Isaiah.“Sit in silence, and go into darkness, 0 daughter of theChaldeans; For you shall no longer be called The Lady ofKingdoms.” (Isaiah 47:5)It is clear from Isaiah 47 that it was the demonic power behindBabylon. It has been evidenced clearly through people, e.g. as wife ofKing Ahab:“Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of theLORD, more than all who were before him.And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivialthing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the sonof Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter ofEthbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and servedBaal and worshiped him. Then he set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.” (1 Kings 16:30-32)The spirit of Jezebel encourages idolatry.Again, in Revelation 2:18-23, Jesus refers to the woman,Jezebel, in the church at Thyatira, who was teaching and beguilingHis servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat thingssacrificed to idols. (Revelation 2:20)
16How to Cast Out Demons and Break CursesSpirit of Jezebel means mother-child religion. We often findthat the spirit of Jezebel is binding a person but within thatperson there is a little child called, ‘Terror’. This spirit of the littlechild will manifest as a six year old or a seven year old child orat any age, because at that time there has been a great traumain the person’s life and that spirit of terror has entered causingdouble-mindedness.The spirit of Jezebel in a person seeks a weak man toencourage him to come under the spirit of Ahab. Any person whois dominating or controlling another person in an ungodly waybecomes subject to the spirit of Jezebel which is, in effect, a spiritof witchcraft.4. THROUGH OUR MINDOur thought life, through fantasy, e.g. through fantasizingabout sex. Also in the playing of games such as dungeons anddragons.5. THROUGH TOUCHING DEAD BODIESSometimes spirits (not of the dead person) but which havebeen around or within the dead person, seek another home andwhen we touch a person in our grief or kiss them, Satan oftenenters.6. SHOCKAs a result of shock or trauma, the devil often attacks and wehave to cast out the spirit of shock or trauma.
How to Cast Out DemonsHowandDemonsBreak CursesEnter177. GRIEFOften as a result of prolonged grief, a spirit of grief can enterand with it can bring all sorts of diseases.8. ACCIDENTSAt the moment of an accident, a spirit of fear can attack aperson and unless cast out, they have continuing sickness orpain.9. MARRIAGE BREAKDOWNSThe anger and resentment and hatred that results frommarriage breakdowns is a primary entry point of demonic power.10. HABITSe.g. masturbation, smoking, fornication.11. UNGODLY SOUL TIESThese are emotional ties existing between people who havebeen in an ungodly relationship, e.g. adultery or persons withwhom another has fornicated. Also, if there has been molestationon the part of the parent to the child. (See prayer in chapter 15)12. TRANSFERENCE(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)Submitting to people who are not Christians.Movies, television, music and magazines full of violence, pornography and lust.Alcoholism.Transference of spirits within a church.Through sexual intercourse, e.g. homosexuals often begin
18How to Cast Out Demons and Break Curses(f)(g)their problems having been molested as a child.Spirits of witchcraft can often enter through the feet whilethe child is in the womb.Unforgiveness. Matthew 18 makes it clear that if we donot forgive, God will deliver us to the torturers, i.e. thedemons.“And his master was angry, and delivered him to thetorturers until he should pay all that was due to him. SoMy heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, fromhis heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”(Matthew 18:34-35)(h)(i)(j)Rejection.Ungodly tradition, pride, prejudice and religion.Examples:Denominationalism.Doctrinal obsession.Legalism, conservatism and intolerance.Reliance on church doctrine to provide false security.Bondage to specific forms of worship and rejection ofothers.Personal prejudices. 1The occult. (See Occult Check List in Appendix) We areforbidden by Scripture to have spiritual contact with theoccult.“When you come into the land which the LORDyour God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow theabominations of those nations. There shall not be foundamong you anyone who makes his son or his daughter
How to Cast Out DemonsHowandDemonsBreak CursesEnter19pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or asoothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, orone who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or onewho calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD,and because of these abominations the LORD your Goddrives them out from before you. You shall be blamelessbefore the LORD your God. For these nations which youwill dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; butas for you, the LORD your God has not appointed such foryou.” (Deuteronomy 18:9-14)(k) Objects in our home. We should destroy any carvings, objects or anything associated with the occult which is inour home:“Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it; but you shallutterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is an accursedthing.” (Deuteronomy 7:26)(l) Ethnic traditions, culture and environment, e.g. Japaneseancestor worship, religious spirits. 2(m) False religions. Any religion that denies:1. That access to God the Father is only through JesusChrist crucified.“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9)
20How to Cast Out Demons and Break Curses“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.No one comes to the Father except through Me.”(John 14:6)2. That there is only one Spirit of God, namely the HolySpirit, giving access to God.“For through Him we both have access by one Spirit tothe Father.” (Ephesians 2:18)3. Any spirit which denies Jesus Christ has come in theflesh, is the Son of God, lived a sinless life, died on theCross and rose on the third day, contains the spirit ofAntichrist. This is very frequent in our church today:“Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heardthat the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichristshave come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if theyhad been of us, they would have continued with us; butthey went out that they might be made manifest, that noneof them were of us.” (1 John 2:18-19)“By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit thatconfesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God.”(1 John 4:2)(n)Heresies, i.e. departures from the Christian faith.
How to Cast Out DemonsHowandDemonsBreak CursesEnter21“that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscienceseared with a hot iron,” (1 Timothy 4:1-2)At this time, seducing spirits will draw away believers intoerror.“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who willsecretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying theLord who bought them, and bring on themselves swiftdestruction.” (2 Peter 2:1)False teachers by underhand means will introduce damnableheresies.“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test thespirits, whether they are of God; because many falseprophets have gone out into the world. By this you knowthe Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that JesusChrist has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit thatdoes not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh isnot of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which youhave heard was coming, and is now already in the world.”(1 John 4:1-3)Increased activity of Antichrist and spirits of Antichrist.
22How to Cast Out Demons and Break CursesFIVECurses11. CURSES CAN BE A PRIME ENTRY POINTOF DEMONIC ACTIVITY:“Like a flitting sparrow, like a flying swallow, So acurse without cause shall not alight.” (Proverbs 26:2)Therefore a curse requires a cause to alight.2. INDICATIONS OF CURSES(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)(f)(g)Mental, emotional and physical breakdowns.Constant sickness, especially hereditary sickness.Marriage breakdowns and family splits.Continuous poverty.Being accident prone.Barrenness and miscarriages.Constant deaths in families.3. ENTRY POINTS OF CURSES(a) Persons with relational authority, e.g. husband over wife orparents over children.Examples: “You can’t cook”; “You’re no good”; “You’re useless”;“You’re a failure”; “You will never be any good”.
How to Cast Out Demons and Break CursesCurses23(b)Self-imposed curses: “I will never be any good”; “I will neverforgive myself”; “God doesn’t love me” etc.(c) Curses brought on by unscriptural covenants, e.g. beingunequally yoked together with unbelievers:“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.”(2 Corinthians 6:14)(d) Curses brought on by the servants of Satan,e.g. witchdoctors, medicine men, tohungas.(e) Curses brought on by disobedience to God’scommandments as follows:Having false gods. (Exodus 20:3-4; Deuteronomy 27:15)Disrespect for parents. (Deuteronomy 27:16)Treachery against a neighbour. (Deuteronomy 27:17)Injustice to the weak. (Deuteronomy 27:18-19)Illicit sex. (Deuteronomy 27:20-23) (Effect of wrong sexualrelationships, particularly those outside of marriage or withmembers of one’s family).Perjury. (Deuteronomy 27:25)Stealing. (Zechariah 5:1-4)Stinginess towards God. (Malachi 3:9)Perverting the gospel. (Galatians 1:8-9)Depending on the flesh. (Jeremiah 17:5)Anti-semitism. (Genesis 12:3; Genesis 28:3,14)Note:Suggested prayers of deliverance in chapter 15.
24How to Cast Out Demons and Break CursesSIXHow to be Delivered1. WE MUST HUMBLE OURSELVESIt is a primary requirement of Scripture that if we are going toreceive anything from the Lord, we must be humble. We musthumble ourselves absolutely before God and others.2. WE MUST BE COMPLETELY HONESTWithout honesty there is no true repentance.3. WE MUST CONFESS OUR SINSIt is important that we come before the Lord humbly andconfess our sins. We can also confess them to others. Thisprovides great release and deliverance.“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray forone another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:16)4. FORGIVEIt is imperative that we forgive others. If we forgive and honourour parents then all will be well with us and we will live long onthe earth.“that it may be well with you and you may live long onthe earth.” (Ephesians 6:3)
How to Cast Out DemonsHowandtoBreakbe DeliveredCurses25If we do not forgive, neither will our Father in Heaven forgiveus our trespasses.“But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father inheaven forgive your trespasses. “ (Mark 11:26)5. WE SHOULD CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORDTO BE DELIVERED“For whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall besaved.” (Romans 10:13)i.e. delivered.6. WE NEED TO REPENTRepentance involves making a decision not to dothe same thing again. Remorse is being sorry for our sins. While, when we come in repentance to God we are sorrythat we have done something, nevertheless, we must makean absolute decision not to go back into the same sin.Our sins separate us from God and can prevent our healing anddeliverance.“Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannotsave; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins havehidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.” (Isaiah59:1-2)The Bible describes sin as follows in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10“Do you not know the unrighteous will not inherit the king-

How to Cast Out DemonsHowandtoBreakbe DeliveredCurses29All of the above scriptures show the need for us to come beforethe Lord and repent of any of these sins so that we can inheritthe kingdom of God.“For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternallife through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)The Bible says if we confess our sins God is faithful and justto forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)I suggest you say a prayer such as the following,“Dear Heavenly Father I come to you in the mighty name ofYour Son Jesus Christ. I believe He died on the Cross to paythe penalty for all my sins, to forgive me, to heal me and toreconcile me to You. I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord andSaviour and I repent of these sins (name them).Thank you Heavenly Father for your forgiveness, love andhealing in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”Please follow the above directions carefully and you will knowthe blessing of God for healing and deliverance. Finally, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”(James 4:8.)
30How to Cast Out Demons and Break CursesSEVENThe MinisterWhen we come to minister in deliverance, we must beabsolutely certain of our authority in Jesus Christ. This meanswe must be totally committed to the Lord and have no doubtwhatsoever that greater is He in us than He who is in the world.“You are of God, little children, and have overcomethem, because He who is in you is greater than he who isin the world.” (1 John 4:4)Jesus sa
