ATTENDANCE POLICYRegular attendance is expected of students in all adult school classes.The teacher must be notified when a student is absent from class ormisses a scheduled appointment. If the teacher is not notified afterthree (3) consecutive absences, students may be dropped from theclass.PROGRESS AND GRADE POLICYProgress in each course is measured by letter grades A, B, C, D, or F(unsatisfactory, no credit). ADULT BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAMThe Adult Basic Education program provides students the opportunityto improve basic Reading, Writing, and Mathematics skills. Uponsuccessful completion of the Adult Basic Education Program, manystudents choose to move into the High School Diploma Program toobtain the Adult Education High School Diploma. The Adult BasicEducation Program is an open/entry-open/exit program. Students mayenroll at any time. The course integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, andemphasizes individual student progress. Course content depends onthe student’s ability at the time of enrollment. Instruction may includevocabulary building, spelling and grammar, writing and composition,reading silently or aloud, and improving listening, critical thinking, andcomprehension skills. At the time of enrollment, students are assessedto ensure proper placement. In order to succeed, students must read ata high enough level to master high-school course content. Elementaryreading instruction is provided in the Adult Basic Education Program forstudents who need to improve reading skills prior to enrolling in theHigh School Diploma Program. Students meet with a teacher/advisor todetermine the courses needed to obtain a high school diploma. Creditis accepted for all applicable previously completed high-school levelcourse work, so it is important to bring a transcript from thelast school of attendance when you meet with the teacher/advisor. Both the Independent Study and the Individualized Studymodels are utilized. Independent Study students have the option tocomplete assigned work in the classroom, where needed help isprovided, or away from school. Students are required to meet with theteacher at a regularly scheduled weekly appointment time. Individualized Study students complete course work in the classroom and areprovided with one-on-one help and small-group instruction. The AdultHigh School Diploma Program is open/entry, open/exit. Students mayenroll at any time during the school year. Diplomas are awardedthroughout the school year. Five Adult School sites offer the Adult HighSchool Diploma Program.
