yourimpact in2012Dear friends,Thank you so much for your support over the last year. We are very proud of ouraccomplishments and the community that we have built together.Organizationally, we grew tremendously in 2012. We expanded our summerprogram to include skateboarding by collaborating with Skate Like a Girl. Wepartnered with the University of Washington School of Social Work to improve ourevaluation tool and better understand the results of our programs. We are active inthe Youth Development Field and are working with Youth Development Executivesof King County to align our outcomes with our peers. As a participant in the YouthProgram Quality Initiative, we have made major program quality improvements. Withsupport from the Raikes Foundation, we continue to strengthen our curriculum. On the ground, your impact was even bigger. We worked with 58 students in 2012and all of them completed our program with a community of people to support them. Our students gained confidence, self-awareness and became more comfortabletalking about the challenges they face. They learned to set goals and became moreoptimistic about their future. From our youth to our mentors to the person who signs up to cook a meal for aSunday service project, people who participate in tSB believe that they can make adifference in their community. Thank you for being a part of that difference. With gratitude,Ashley Miller, Executive Director

At our annual Soiree, we ran out ofchairs and exceeded our fundraising goal by 15,000!Expandedprograms &partnershipstSB has joined a collective impact movement to close theopportunity gap for students of color and low income studentsin the NW through participation in the Roadmap Project andYouth Development Executives of King County. We partnered with Skate Like a Girl to introduce skateboardingto our Arts in Service Program to align with our mission ofproviding outdoor adventure to help youth build courage andconfidence.Staff developed Mentors for Mentors program to utilize theexpertise of retired mentors to support new volunteers in ourCore Program.Developedour datacenterWe raised our understanding of data and outcomes byworking with the UW School of Social Work to build a newprogram evaluation tool and logic model.Staff participated in the Raikes Foundation Youth ProgramQuality Initiative to undergo an evidence-based assessment oftSB programs. One of the greatest things I got from tSB is to“push your growing edges.”you had to step out of your own bubble.you need to try new things,& it was okay through the process TO fail & fallbecause that’s how you learn togrow & better yourself. I am extremely fortunate to learnto push my growing edges in tSB becauseevery single person in that programcares about your well being.they were there to support youevery single step of the way &they made you feel safe.tSB did not only give me a program to be involved with, they gave me a community.- Maryyah T. ‘11

tSB serves youth between the agesof 14-18, primarily recruiting from thesouth and southwest areas ofSeattle; neighborhoods with the mostdiversity and strongest need. tSBrecruits and receives referrals fromlocal high schools which report highdropout rates, and have largenumbers of students with EarlyWarning Indicators. Many of our participants share thecommon challenges of residence inlow income neighborhoods, lack ofyouth programs, enrollment inunder-funded schools, lack ofparental involvement and minimalaccess to non-urban areas.unsupervisedyouth are6xmore likelyto drop out250 hrs.of mentor contactper youthin tSB31%of Washingtonyouth areunsupervisedafter school105 & 60 & 53hours of outdooradventure & servicelearning & life skillscurriculum per tSB youth8%of at-risk youth inWashington have anidentifiable mentor90%of tSB youth saythey have a positiveadult role model
